Candy Motor Workbench - KNSB, KNDX

I use a Waring Kitchen Kettle to melt directly with no oil or wax bath. I do use a Router speed controller set at low to minimize local hot spots by lowering the on-temp of the heating elements.

I bought a new Kitchenaid 90 mixer off EBay for $125. I wanted to build a warming mixing bowl so didn't go for the larger model(s).

Motors

DPS Thunderflame Class casing

This is the casing that you receive and build a motor for as part of the Thunderflame Class.

38mm  720ns-740ns nominal;  J-650 per DPS;  I-284 to I-485 per Alan
It will be 38mm x 14.750 long, 720-740ns, rated at about a J-650.
Total grain length is 12in x 1.250 dia and the nozzle is .422 in dia. Case is 1.5 od and has a .083 wall.

I also ran KNSB SRM Simms using casting tube and two different nozzles from Loki's page (lacking full information from DPS as specs not online)
WIth 4 bates grains X" long, 1/2" core, and two nozzle sizes, I got about a H228-280ns at two different KNs. One of those sims used the stock DPS Thunderflame nozzle and had a low Kn of 140ish (too low? I don't know, but I'm concerned). I then simmed with the next  sized down Loki nozzle size. Similar performance, much better KN

Caveman Rocketry 2 grain 38mm Motor

This motor comes with a Inox (SS) nozzle. Should last forever - though I hear it's hard on o-rings vs graphite (due to heat conduction).
Nozzle bore 0.315 (approx and likley it's bigger by up to 0.010). Case OAL 5.185" x 1.375" ID; Nozzle closure 0.605" thick; End closure 0.590" thick;  Snap rings 2x 0.11

Hybrid EX - Experimental Hybrid Rocket Motors

This is a new area of experimental motors that I am venturing into.

My Hybrid Experimental Motor Research page
My HyperTEK Experimental Motors page (shortcut)

PBAN Experimental Composite Rocket Motors

I have Dr. Terry McCreary's highly regarded Experimental Rocket Propellant book and recommend it as a start for anybody considering getting into composite motors.

He recommends that experimenters start with PBAN not HTPB and that mostly as PBAN has a very long potlife and is very forgiving. The downside to PBAN is that it requires a heated cure and compounding is also facilitated, though it doesn't strictly require, heating during the compounding process.

I have started with PBAN, and will likely stick with it for a while, as my wife is a Toxicologist and has forbidden from the house the isocyanates associated with curing HTPB. By contrast, PBAN is cured with DER331 Epoxy Resin which is relatively innocuous. (For some humor, read the aRocket thread I initiated called "Help, My Wife is a Toxicologist" )

I have completed a temperature controlled curing oven, and a heated mixing bowl (ala Novalab), and I use my RobinAir powered vacuum degassing plate with my Kitchenaid mixer. I will post pictures of all of these.

I have recently completed casting and test firing Terry's SIMPLE propellant in what should be a 1500 NS K-500 motor. It was in a 4 grain bates configuration with 13" of propellant with 5/8" core in a Loki 1600Ns 54mm case. I will be flying this at Whitakers, NC in a new 4" 10lb rocket called "Ignorant of My Destiny"

Terry McCreary's website: http://www.experimentalrocketry.com/
Chris Krstanovic's "Novalab" heated mixing bowl: http://www.novalab.org/rockets/mixer.htm

Curing Ovens

I have built a propellant curing oven and a tube curing oven. I now have new pages; pelease refer to them.

HTPB Curatives

Since my wife has banned Isocyanate chemistry I haven't done much with HTPB. But I did want to make some smoke tracking grains with zinc so had to sneak a batch in. I had some samples of R20 and R45 but no curative so I got a pound bottle of HC-7 Hydroxy-Cure from Dave at Mr. Fiberglass. It worked well and I've created a HC-7 Hydroxy-Cure web page with the properties he provided me based on some evaluation work by Dr. McCreary.

Finocyl and Non Circular Cores

finocyl,"wagon wheel", "rod and tube","core","dendrite", "cross", propellant grain geometries and thrust profiles.

I've started looking at improvising and using finocyl and other non circular cores. I've started a finocyl page, and a cruciform page.

Snap Rings and Such

        I don't use external snap-rings on 54mm motors, I make those
motors from 2" nominal schedule 80 pipe:  2.38" OD x 0.22" with 1.939"
ID and I machine down the OD to fit in the motor mounts.  I leave about
1/4" of the original OD on the aft end to stop forward motion.
